Defying Adversity: Empowering Young Global Citizens to Lead

Volunteering

Volunteering for Unicef Nigeria

In an era marked by unprecedented challenges, young volunteers worldwide are stepping up to prove that age is no barrier to creating meaningful change. From climate action initiatives to educational outreach programs, youth-led volunteer efforts are reshaping communities and challenging traditional notions of leadership.

Take me, a 25-year-old from Nigeria who launched a youth community for the SDGs during the pandemic. When schools closed, I mobilized fellow students online and shared career and professional ttips and resources through webinars and online programs. What started as an online initiative now connects hundreds of students across West Africa under my organization, Outliers Youths Network.

Young leaders like me aren’t just filling gaps in the communities – we’re developing crucial skills that traditional education often overlooks. Through volunteering, we’re learning project management, cross-cultural communication, and problem-solving in real-world contexts. More importantly, I was gaining confidence to challenge systemic issues and envision innovative solutions. This knowledge is helping me in my Edtech career today.

The rise of youth-led volunteering represents a powerful shift in global citizenship. Young changemakers ike me ldemonstrate that leadership isn’t about waiting for permission or perfect conditions – it’s about taking initiative, building bridges, and having the courage to act in the face of adversity. That is excatly what I did when I launched my online community during the pandemic.
